John Denver became a star thanks to the folk songs he wrote, most of which were situated in Colorado. Danoff had Johnny Cash as the inspiration for the song, but Denver recognized that the song could become a smash hit when he heard an earlier version. The singer recorded the song within a couple of days following a performance to an enthusiastic audience on the streets of Washington D.C.
